Rain, rain, rain! Apparently the wet season has arrived about a month early, and Cairns had the wettest October day on record yesterday. The children are back in jeans and gumboots after several weeks of shorts and bare feet. They're even wearing winter pyjamas tonight!
In spite of the rain, we've been out and about, seeing the local sights. This morning we visited the Nerada tea plantation. Due to the wet weather we didn't get to walk among the tea bushes, but we had a tour of the factory and enjoyed a devonshire tea.

Then we stopped at the Tarzali Lakes Smokehouse. After enjoying a lovely lunch (Caesar salad with smoked barramundi), we were taken down to see if we could see some of the platypus that live in the lake. The property's owner asked what we knew about platypus, and Arthur said, "They are egg laying mammals and their babies are called puggles." (!!) We spotted quite a few platypus, apparently making us part of only 8% of Australians who have seen them in the wild.

"How far can we go in before our boots fill with water?" |

Can you spot the Platypus? |
On the way home Arthur complained of a tummy ache. We stopped at Ravenshoe on the way home to get some bread, and while I was inside the shop he was sick all over the back seat of the car. Poor kid- and poor Philip, who had to deal with it! I thought at first that it might have been motion sickness (the road wound around a bit) but he hasn't been able to keep anything down all evening, so I suspect he has a bug of some sort. Hopefully he'll be better in the morning.

I'm one of the 8% too. We saw one years ago when we were camping near Yarra Junction. And Arthur probably has a bug which he got off the kids here. A few of them have it. The good thing is it doesn't last long.
I'm enjoying the blog :)
