From Maroochydore to Mt Warning

Leaving Maroochydore this morning, we took the scenic route along Steve Irwin Way as far as Beerwah, where we re-joined the Bruce Highway (otherwise known as the M1 or Highway No. 1).  This is the fastest route to bypass the busy, built-up holiday coast and avoid Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast, but the down-side is that for about two hours of the trip the only thing we saw was freeway!  When we got to Tweed Heads we turned inland and soon got our first glimpses of the imposing peak of Mount Warning.  The Mount Warning Road took us through lovely rural countryside and the pretty town of Murwillumbah, finally bringing us to our destination: the Mount Warning Holiday Park.

A first glimpse of Mount Warning

It is beautiful here, and so quiet!  We are by no means the only people at the holiday park, but, in contrast to the one at Maroochydore, we can’t see any other caravans from where we are camped.  We are surrounded by sub-tropical rainforest, and can just see the summit of Mount Warning in the background.
Almost as soon as we had finished setting up camp we had a visit from several hopeful kookaburras.  One of them even flew down and took some pieces of meat from our fingers!  We have seen several different kinds of birds, and many others can be heard in the surrounding trees.  As I write, the sun has gone down and the air is vibrating with the sound of cicadas.  (The mosquitoes are also making their presence felt, unfortunately!)

Red browed finches (I think... can you check for me, Tim?)

We have booked a full week here, and I think we are going to enjoy it immensely. Internet access is a bit spasmodic, however, so blog updates may be few and I'll have to add pictures later!

********

I have reduced the size of the photos considerably, and it is still taking about five minutes for each one to upload!  I've managed to add pictures to this post, but I'll have to post another update with today's photos tomorrow, as we are about to build a campfire so we can toast some marshmallows for dessert...

Good idea, Amy - I'll do that too! Although your words paint a picture too, Amaria - enjoying your blog even without any photos. Have a great week at Mt Warning Holiday Park. Love, Henkela

To Aunty Amaria,
They are red browed finches, I looked them up a few days ago because me,Jonathan and Dad saw them when we were at the Australian Reptile Park a few weeks ago and I wanted to know what they were. They were in a big bird cage with lots of other bird species but they were not supposed to be in there, they could fit through the holes in the bird cage, they were eating the bird food that was meant for the other birds. They were with some male Superb fairy Wrens.

Thanks, Tim! Our bird book is only small and doesn't have every bird in it... and right now it tkes too long to google information because my internet connection is so slow! What a coincidence that you just looked them up recently!
