Byron Bay

Just beside our caravan there is a genuine "Jungle Gym" where Esther and Arthur like to play.  They use the tangle of tree roots and vines to climb up the almost vertical slope, while coming down again can be acheived either by abseiling with the help of one of the vines, or sliding on the seat of their pants!  We had planned a trip to Byron Bay, but before the "animal rescue team" could be allowed out in public they needed a wash and a complete change of clothes.

We actually had to forbid the children swinging from this vine, as a slip would bring them crashing down a sheer drop of several metres. It was fun while it lasted, though!

This one is safer!

Byron Bay is well known as a popular holiday destination, and we thought it would be nice to have a beach outing while we're in the area.  When we were nearly there it suddenly dawned on us that "Schoolies Week" was probably close, and that Byron Bay is one of the popular destinations for the annual event.  Sure enough, the first wave of schoolies had already arrived and about half of the people on the beach seemed to be year twelve students, freshly freed from exams and study.  Fortunately, the celebrations were not yet in full swing.
It is easy to see why Byron Bay has become so popular.  The sand is amazingly white, stretching for miles, the water is clean and clear, and the Border Ranges, with Mount Warning prominently visible, form a spectacular backdrop.  After a swim (or, more accurately, a struggle with the waves and currents) we dried off in the sun and had a seafood basket for lunch before heading back.

Clouds gathering over Mount Warning on the way home.  We half expected a storm, but so far it hasn't come.

The caravan park is also beginning to fill up for the weekend.  This evening the older couple in the next caravan came over for a drink and a chat before dinner and later, when we lit our campfire, we were joined by a lovely group of five girls on holidays together after finishing their exams.  Esther and Arthur fell asleep while we were chatting.  It had been a long day and looking at the firelight is so soothing...

It's so nice that you're taking so many photos to trigger the children's (and your own) memories of what they've experienced in time to come. The water that Esther's surfing on looks beautiful and I love to see the fun the children are having in their real jungle gym. Do you know the history behind the name "Mount Warning"? Have a good weekend, Love from Henkela

What a great playground the children have there. Looks like a nice camping spot. Any idea when the car will be fixed yet?
